Animal Game: A Somatica Exercise for Sensual Awareness, Embodied Play, and Primal Passion
Estimated reading time: 8 minutes
This playful, provocative article introduces the Animal Game, a Somatica exercise designed to help you drop out of your head and back into your body through instinct, sensation, and embodied play.
It’s an inviting introduction to one of Somatica’s signature tools for building sensual awareness, confidence, and erotic aliveness.
Like so many other people, you probably at times move through an intimate experience as if watching yourself from the outside. You may be tracking your partner’s reactions, wondering how you look, trying to read every cue, or making sure you’re doing everything just right.
That kind of monitoring can really pull you away from your body and out of the flow of the sensual experience.
The Animal Game is one of the Somatica exercises we created to help bring you back into your body through sensation, instinct, and play. It invites you to tune into all of your senses (except sight) so that touch, sound, smell, movement, and energetic awareness can come forward.
In that space, your sensuality has room to wake up. You begin to feel instead of analyze. You respond instead of perform.
What the Animal Game Is – and Why We Created It
Danielle and I created the Animal Game as a somatic game within the Somatica Method to help people reconnect with instinct, sensuality, and the natural intelligence of the body.
In the Animal Game, you embody an animal or your own inner animal through embodied movement, sensation, and energy. Instead of analyzing your actions or worrying about performance, you let your body explore through somatic play.
This makes the Animal Game a unique blend of somatic exercises, primal movement exercises, and embodied play.
Because your eyes are closed, you’re less likely to monitor your partner’s reactions or worry about how you appear. Instead, you begin to rely on your other senses—touch, sound, smell, and energetic awareness. This shift naturally deepens sensuality and presence.
There is something deeply freeing about letting the body lead. When sight drops away, many people feel less compelled to monitor their partner so closely. Instead, you can notice the texture of the floor under your hands, the brush of skin, the sound of breath, the feeling of moving toward or away from another body. The whole experience becomes more immediate, more embodied, and often much more sexy.
We also introduced the Animal Game in Season 1 of the award-winning UK television series Virgin Island, where we were the lead sexologists.
Watching the participants try it for the first time was fascinating. At the beginning, many of them were visibly nervous and hesitant to let themselves go into the exercise. But as the process unfolded and they experienced what it felt like to move from instinct rather than self-consciousness, more and more of them were able to drop in.
By the end, participants who had initially felt awkward or shy were exploring the exercise with curiosity and playfulness, accessing a freer and more sensual side of themselves. Watch the exercise:
Why Primal Play Unlocks Confidence and Desire
When people step into primal play, they often feel a surprising sense of freedom.
Instead of performing or trying to impress someone, you begin exploring through instinct and curiosity. This type of embodied play can dissolve self-consciousness and help you reconnect with authentic desire.
For those who struggle with performance anxiety or who are overly focused on pleasing their partner, the Animal Game acts as a disinhibitor.
Through somatic play your body starts responding more spontaneously and your nervous system relaxes. Energy flows more freely. And that’s when passion begins to emerge.
Animalistic Passion and the Passionate Movie
In our work with clients, we often talk about your Hottest Sexual Movies, the internal erotic scenarios that represent the experiences you most want to have during intimacy. A Hottest Sexual Movie reflects your Core Desires which are the feelings you want to experience when you’re turned on.
One of the most common is the Passionate Movie. The Passionate Movie is about raw desire and being deeply wanted. It’s the feeling that someone is drawn to you with excitement and hunger almost like they can’t help themselves.
That’s why the Animal Game can be so powerful. Through primal play and embodied movement, you practice expressing attraction and curiosity from your body rather than your mind.
If your partner has the Passionate Movie as one of their main turn-ons, this kind of uninhibited energy can feel incredibly exciting to them because it makes them feel deeply desired, untamed, and taken.
Many people secretly want to feel that spark of animalistic desire coming toward them. The Animal Game helps you access that energy naturally.
Over time, the game becomes a powerful practice for developing sensual awareness, playful curiosity, instinctive connection, and a more confident expression of desire.
Try the Animal Game Yourself!
You can explore the Animal Game with a partner as a playful way to lower your inhibitions and show each other more passion and desire.
Step 1: Have a Quick Boundary Conversation
Before beginning the Animal Game, take a moment to discuss boundaries so both of you feel comfortable and safe. Talk about how far you want the experience to go and whether certain parts of the body are off limits to touch. It’s also helpful to agree on green, yellow, and red as safe words.
Green means you can bring in more animal.
Yellow means slow down a bit.
Red means fully stop and check in.
Having those agreements in place allows both of you to relax and explore more freely during the Animal Game.
Step 2: Begin the Experience
Both of you get on your hands and knees.
Close your eyes.
Take several slow breaths and let your awareness drop into your body.
Now imagine your inner animal beginning to wake up.
It might be a specific animal or simply your instinctual, playful self.
Start to stretch and move through the space.
As you move, begin to notice your senses.
Feel the ground beneath you.
Notice the sensations in your muscles and skin.
Become aware of sounds in the room.
Notice any scents in the air.
This sensory exploration is a core part of the Animal Game and helps deepen your presence and awareness.
Step 3: Discover the Other Animal
Now let yourself notice that there is another animal in the room. Without opening your eyes, begin to explore them through movement and curiosity. You might crawl closer, circle around them, brush gently against them, or pause and sense their presence.
Let the interaction unfold through embodied movement.
This is where the Animal Game often becomes especially playful and exciting. Through primal play, you may feel curiosity, affection, sensual exploration, or bursts of passionate energy emerging naturally. Let your instincts guide you.
What You May Notice During the Animal Game
The Animal Game often reveals fascinating patterns in how you express curiosity and desire. You might notice whether you approach easily or hesitate, whether you explore freely or hold back, and whether you feel playful, sensual, or energized.
These discoveries are part of what makes somatic play therapy and somatic exercises so powerful. They reveal your natural instincts without forcing anything.
Through repeated primal movement exercises like the Animal Game, many people discover that expressing attraction can feel more relaxed, spontaneous, and fun.
Debriefing the Experience
After the Animal Game, take a few minutes to talk with your partner about the experience.
You might reflect on whether you felt playful or shy, whether you allowed your instincts to guide you, and whether moments of passion or curiosity emerged.
Many people find that the Animal Game awakens a lively, sensual energy they don’t often express.
Conclusion
When you reconnect with your inner animal, something in you begins to wake up. Your senses sharpen, your body feels more alive, and desire starts to move more freely through you.
The Animal Game offers a playful way to rediscover that instinctive energy so that you can feel less anxious, more present, more confident, and more deeply aroused by the experience of connection itself.
